How to Appear in ChatGPT (and Other AI Answers)
When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI "what's the best X near me / for Y," the AI names a short list. Getting onto that list is the goal of AEO. Here is how, step by step.
1. Make sure AI can read you at all
AI crawlers read server-rendered HTML and usually don't run JavaScript. If your key info loads via JS, the AI never sees it. Output your business facts as server-side schema.org data. AEO for WordPress
2. Allow the AI crawlers
Check robots.txt actually allows GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended. Many sites block them by default without realizing.
3. Add an llms.txt
Give AI a short map of your site and the facts you want quoted. What is llms.txt?
4. Answer the questions people actually ask AI
Write short, factual, well-headed answers to real questions ("best [service] in [place]", "are you open on Sundays"). AI lifts clear, extractable statements. An FAQ section with FAQ schema helps.
5. Be consistent and referenced elsewhere
AI trusts sources consistent across the web and mentioned by others — directories, forums, reviews. Keep name, address, hours identical everywhere.
6. Measure it
Ask the AI engines your target questions and see whether you appear — then track over time. That before/after is the real proof AEO is working.
